Qualitative/Quantitative Lesson 4 "Matter, Separation of Mixtures, and Sig Figs"

I. Introduction

Opening Assignment:

Warm-Up: Identify the following as an element, compound or a mixture: Tap water, distilled water, iron, sand, sodium chloride, iron/sand, salt water, aluminum
Check over the homework:
1. Sections 2.4 - 2.5 Notes
2. Self-Check Exercises 2.2 & 2.3
Review warm-up
State the purpose

II. The Lesson:

Activity #1: Review warm-up (A Review of Sections 3.3 & 3.4)
Activity #2: Separate the following mixtures (Application of Section 3.5):
1. Salt from a salt water solution (The water does not to be collected)
2. Sand from a water/sand mixture (The water must be collected)
3. Iron from an iron/sand mixture
Activity #3: Demonstrate the separation of oxygen from the compound potassium chlorate
Activity #4: Discuss determining with significant figures and rounding rules (”Significant Figures.ppt”)
Activity #5: Complete Significant Figures WS #1 (Identify the number of significant figures and underline the least decimal place)
Activity #6: Review Significant Figures WS #1
Activity #7: Complete significant figure and rounding problems using Significant Figures and Multiplication/Division WS #1: 1 - 12, 17 - 24

Summary Assignment:

Summarize today's lesson
1. Describe how you separate iron from iron/sand mixture.
2. Identify the number of significant figures and underline the least decimal place in 867530 .
