Quantitative Lesson 59 "Types of Reactions & Balancing Chemical Equations"

Science and Technology Standards:

PA Standard 3.4.10A: Classify and describe, in equation form, types of chemical and nuclear reactions

Purpose:

1. I will utilize the fence posting method to solve problems.
2. I will name various compounds.
3. I will write the formula for various compounds.
4. I will identify the name for a compound.
5. I will balance chemical equations.

Homework Due:

1. No homework

Handouts/Supplies:

1. Balancing Equations WS #1

I. Introduction

Opening Assignment:

Warm-Up: Describe covalent and ionic bonds.
Review warm-up
State the purpose

II. The Lesson:

Activity #1: Review the types of reactions
1. Combustion (organic substance + O2 → CO2 + H2O)
2. Decomposition (Break Up)

a. metallic hydroxide (NaOH) → metallic oxide (Na2O) + water (H2O)
b. metallic carbonate (Na2CO3) → metallic oxide (Na2O) + carbon dioxide (CO2)
c. metallic chlorate (NaClO3) → metallic chloride (NaCl) + oxygen (O2)
d. oxyacid (HNO3) → nonmetallic oxide (N2O5) + water (H2O)
e. binary compound (H2O) → 2 elements (H2 + O2)

3. Composition / Synthesis (Dating)
4. *Single Replacement (Vanilla Ice) (*Use the activity series (p. 266): element must be above the ion that is going to be replaced)
a. element (A+) + compound (A+ & B+C-) → element + compound (B+ & A+C-)
b. element (A-) + compound (B+C-) → element (C-)+ compound (B+A-)
c. Zn + 2 HCl → *H2 + ZnCl2 (*Diatomic element)
d. F2 + 2 HCl → Cl2 + 2 HF
5. *Double Replacement (Prom) (Both reactants must be soluble)
a. compound (A+B-) + compound (C+D-) → compound + compound (B+ & A+C-)
b. K2(CrO4) + Pb(NO3)2 → 2 K(NO3) + Pb(CrO4)
Activity #3: Discuss balancing equation steps
1. Write the formulas for the elements
2. Write the formulas for the compounds (subscripts are used to balance the charges to zero)
3. Use coefficients to balance the number of atoms of each element on each side
Activity #4: Review non-monotamic ions (Diatomic elements: H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2; Tetratomic element: P4; Octatomic: S8)
Activity #5: Complete Balancing Equations WS #1: 1 - 13 (Part I)
Activity #6: Review Balancing Equations WS #1: 1 - 12 (Part I)
Activity #7: Submit Balancing Equations WS #1: 13 (Part I)
Activity #8: Complete Balancing Equations WS #1: 1 - 9 (Part II)

III. Closure:
