Quantitative Lesson 21 "Modern Atomic Theory"

Science and Technology Standards:

PA Standard 3.4.10A: Classify and describe, in equation form, types of chemical and nuclear reactions

Purpose:

1. I will identify the properties of electromagnetic radiation.
2. I will identify how electrons create light.
3. I will identify the various regions and their properties on the periodic table.
4. I will identify the atomic size and ionization energy trends on the periodic table.
5. I will calculate wavelength, frequency, and energy of electromagnetic radiation.

I. Introduction

Opening Assignment:

Warm-Up: Write down the noble gas configuration for Cs, Pd, Na, K, Cu, Cr, Ag, Pt, Co, & Bk.
Review warm-up
State the purpose

II. The Lesson:

Activity #1: Review notes on chapter 10
1. Identify the properties of the 3 regions on the periodic table
2. Atomic size and ionization energy trends
3. Discuss higher energy levels and the similarities in their energies
4. Discuss electrons, hydrogen light emission, wavelengths, and energy levels on page 286
5. De Broglie, the electron cloud model, and s, p, d, & f subshells
Activity #2: Discuss Electromagnetic Radiation Equations: E=hn & c=ln
Activity #3: Discuss Planck's constant, h, blackbody radiation, and the speed of light, c
Activity #4: Complete page 119: 31 - 35 in the Modern Chemistry textbook
Activity #5: Observe the magnesium oxide demonstration
Activity #6: Observe the sodium in water demonstration
