Qualitative Lesson 19 "Electromagnetic Radiation"

Science and Technology Standards:

PA Standard 3.4.10A: Classify and describe, in equation form, types of chemical and nuclear reactions

Purpose:

1. I will identify the number of outershell electrons for various elements using the periodic table.
2. I will identify the noble gas notation for various elements using the periodic table.
3. I will identify the ion configurations for various elements.
4. I will identify the how electrons create light.
5. I will compare how light emission of similar energy levels differs for elements in the same row on the periodic table.

Homework Due:

1. Ion Configuration Problem Set #1: 184W6+; 52Cr6+; 56Fe3+; 48Ti2+; 59Co2+ (Due Lesson 19)
2. Read and Take Notes on Sections 10.1 - 10.4 (Due Lesson 19)

Handouts/Supplies:

1. Spectral Tubes

I. Introduction

Opening Assignment:

Warm-Up: Write down the location of the final electron for various elements using the periodic table for Mg, Nb, Np, Y, Cf, Pr, Nd, Pa, & Pm.
Review warm-up
State the purpose

II. The Lesson:

Activity #1: Discuss and complete the noble gas notation for the warmup
1. Review Practice Examples: Mg, Nb, Np, Y, Cf, Pr, Nd, Pa, Pm
2. Identify the last full p electron
3. Identify the orbitals between the last full p electron and the location of the final electron
4. Identify the last full p orbital's noble gas identity
5. Compare the noble gas notation to the periodic table's noble gas notation
Activity #2: Review Ion Configuration Problem Set #1 (184W6+; 52Cr6+; 56Fe3+; 48Ti2+; 59Co2+)
