Background
109 is a visual arts and science collaborative project supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry which aims to explore and reflect upon the diversity of elements that comprise matter in as unique and innovative manner as possible.

109 aims to produce a new and vibrant visual assessment of the startling diversity of material that constitutes the world in which we live, not simply by rendering images of the respective elements but also by investigating the manner in which they affect our daily lives in largely unseen and often unexpected ways.

Contributors to the 109 project include :

Images & models - Murray Robertson, artist & printmaker, Glasgow Print Studio, who exhibits regularly internationally and whose clients have included Scottish Television and the BBC Visual Effects Department.

Elements text - Dr. John Emsley, Science Writer in Residence at Cambridge University, editor of Chem@Cam, and acclaimed author of 'The Elements' and 'Molecules at an Exhibition' ( both Oxford University Press 1998).

Periodic Landscapes text - Dr Ann Prescott, Lecturer in Chemistry, Abertay University, Dundee, whose previous experience in the initiation of science/art exhibitions has been invaluable.

Animation - Alastair Wells, video maker & animator, Genetix, Glasgow.

Soundtracks - M.P.Lancaster, Memory Bank Studio, Glasgow.

Printed matter - David Wells, Portfolio Graphics, Glasgow.

109 would also like to thank in particular Dr. James Thomson of Dundee University and members of the Tayside Branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry without whose support and enthusiasm this project would not have been realised.

109 is also supported by Glasgow City Council, Department of Performing Arts & Venues.
